Hookah Smoking - No Safer Than Cigarettes
Hookah, which is also known as a goza is a water pipe which is a popular way of smoking tobacco in both Asia as well asThe Middle East. It has recently become a bit of a trend here in the USA with many Hookah bars popping up in major metropolitan areas as well as some surburban, and more rural towns. It is a major concern as hookah smoking is becoming increasingly popular with young adults as well as teens.
A Hookah pipe consists of the following:
- The base in which water is placed.
- The bowl which is where the tobacco is placed as well as the source of heat which is generally a piece of coal.
- The tray which is located underneath the bowl and is intended to catch ashes.
- The hookah hose which is what the smoker uses to inhale the smoke from the hookah
- The pipe which goes from the bowl to the base into the water.
Some people are under the impression that hookah smoking is somehow safer than smoking a cigarette. This is completely untrue. The toxins in the tobacco smoke that are the same harmful poisons in a cigarette are not somehow less toxic or removed by passing through the water. It is also estimated that in a one hour hookah smoking session as much as 200 times the amount of harmful smoke is actually breathed in by a smoker as would be from a single cigarette.
