My New Year’s Resolution: Can I Quit Smoking For Good?
Every year millions of people decide on ways that they intend to improve their lives come the New Year. Some people swear to exercise, others to eat right, and many people decide that this will be the day that they put down the cigarettes for good.
Is New Year’s The Best Time To Try To Quit?
Unfortunately, as many people that are successful in quitting smoking at the start of a new year; there are even more who will fail. What are the reasons for this? Well, there are several. Some of the reasons people fail to quit smoking successfully as a New Year’s resolution are:
- They are choosing to quit for someone else rather than for themselves
- They do NOT do research on what to expect with nicotine withdrawals and therefore are unprepared to cope with the cravings
- They have not planned ahead to have the support of friends and family as they begin this huge challenge
- Many people drink to bring in the New Year and therefore wake up hung over and craving a cigarette. The whole “I will start tomorrow” mentality kicks in before January 1st is even over.
- They do not discuss with their Doctor that they are planning on quitting and therefore have not talked about medication and nicotine replacement therapies to assist them reach their goals.
If I slip up, have I failed? Is it too late?
NO! One of the biggest mistakes people tend to make with any type of goal is to mistake a small set back for a permanent one. If a person slips or “falls off the wagon” then they just need to get back up.
