When a person successfully quits smoking, several things take place within the body that help to improve one’s health. These changes begin almost immediately and the longer a person remains smoke free, the greater the health benefits. Some of the benefits that take place are:

- After 2 to 3 years, the risk of a heart attack due to smoking is basically no longer a factor and a person is just as likely to have a heart attack as someone who never smoked.
- Ten years after person has quit smoking, their risk of developing cancer is roughly the same as someone who is a non-smoker.
