Quitting Smoking Improves The Health of Others

While many people will look to the obvious health benefits of quitting to the actual smoker, some may not take into account the benefits to those around the smoker as well. There has been much discussion throughout the years on how harmful smoking cigarettes can be but consider these other health risks to others:

  • Cigarettes give off harmful toxic fumes in what is known as secondhand smoke.
  • Smoking around infants has been shown to put them at higher risks for certain diseases and illnesses.
  • When a parent smokes, their child becomes more likely to pick up the habit as well.
  • Smoking when pregnant and even BEFORE you get pregnant can increase the odds of having a low birth weight baby as well as increases the chances of a SIDS related death.
  • It has been proven that smokers are more likely to be distracted while driving than a non-smoker and therefore are considered to be at a higher risk of causing an auto accident.

Some people have a very hard time quitting even though they are perfectly aware of the risks that they are subjecting themselves to. However, perhaps one might find it easier to quit when taking into account the risks they are subjecting the people around them to as well, whether it be a stranger or a loved one.
