Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer: What is the Prognosis and Survival Rate?
Roughly 85% of all lung cancers are of the non-small cell type. There are three different types of NSLCL and they are:
- Squamous Cell Carcinoma: About 25% to 30% of all lung cancers are squamous cell carcinomas. These are generally related to smoking and are usually found in the middle of the lungs, near a bronchus.
- Adenocarcinoma: This type accounts for about 40%. It is usually found in the outer region of lung.
- Large-cell (undifferentiated) carcinoma: This type accounts for about 10% to 15% . It can be located in any part of the lung. It grows and spreads quickly, which make it harder to treat than other forms of NSLCL.
How Do The Stages of NSCLC Impact Survival Rates?
Along with the different types of NSCLC there are also stages of the disease. These stages refer to both the size of the tumor or mass as well as whether or not the cancer has spread to lymph nodes and beyond. The stage of the cancer is what primarily dictates what the prognosis is.
Survival Rates
Depending on what stage the NSCLC is in when diagnosed, they have a certain chance of surviving. These numbers are based on the survival rate for a person 5 years after being diagnosed with the disease.
- Stage I : 56% survival rate
- Stage II: 34% survival rate
- Stage III: 10% survival rate Stage IV: 2% survival rate
Conclusion
As new treatments and medications become available the survival rates can increase and more and more people are surviving. As with any type of cancer it is very important to be diagnosed early to have the best chance of beating it. If you are experiencing any symptoms and signs of having lung cancer; you should definitely make an appointment to see your doctor right away. It is also important that if you are smoking that you quit as soon as possible as this will greatly reduce your chances of developing this deadly disease.
