Stop Smoking Today | Nicorette

Nicorette

Nicorette is the trade or brand name for a product designed to reduce the withdrawal symptoms experienced by people trying to quit smoking. Most people associate stopping smoking with the use of patches, but there is more than just that, and Nicorette produces a total of five different products:

None of these are as good as simply giving up nicotine altogether, but are better than the effects of smoking. There are approximately four thousand different toxic chemicals in cigarette smoke that are all dangerous to your health, and in addition to the carcinogenic ones there are carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide that reduce the ability of your blood to carry oxygen. That makes your heart beat faster and increases your blood pressure.

Each Nicorette product has a different use, though the desired objective is the same: to stop smoking. Let's have a look at each individually and discuss their merits.

Gum

The gum contains about a third of the nicotine content of a cigarette. It also takes a lot longer to extract the nicotine by chewing the gum than smoking a cigarette would. You have the option of a strict twelve week program, or simply chewing it when you feel like a cigarette. It does two things: it provides you with a nicotine supply to the blood through the mouth lining, and also something to do with your mouth. It thus meets two of the needs of the smoker: the nicotine and the use of the mouth. It does not, however, meet the need to hold something in the fingers.

It should be used via what is known as the 'chew and park' method. You should chew it until you have a peppery taste, and then 'park' it between your cheek and gum. Once you feel you need more, then do the same again and so on. If you use it like regular chewing gum, it will dissolve in your saliva and be swallowed rather than absorbed through the lining of the mouth, and give you stomach problems.

It comes in five flavors: Cinnamon Surge, Fruit Chill, FreshMint, Original and Mint. But keep in mind that it isn't candy and should only be used by those with a serous addiction. You must not smoke when using the gum or you will suffer from an excess of nicotine that, when extreme, can be fatal.

Inhaler

The inhaler can be used when you feel that you need a nicotine 'fix'. It contains a mouthpiece into which a plastic tube containing 10 mg nicotine and menthol is inserted. When you feel like a cigarette, you use the inhaler that takes the edge of your craving.

Nasal Spray

The spray should be used to help you resist the craving for nicotine during the first eight weeks. Like the inhalator, it provides a small dose of nicotine, enough to help the desire but not so much as to prevent you from smoking. It should not be overused, and the instructions are easy to follow.

Patches

Nicotine patches are well known to everybody. The nicotine is absorbed into the bloodstream through the skin. You use them for continuous 16 hour periods, which provide a constant supply of nicotine. The idea is to reduce the dose gradually using he three different strengths of patch available.

Microtabs

The microtabs are small sublingual tablets that you dissolve under the tongue, where the nicotine content is absorbed into your bloodstream. You should take one or two an hour.

Conclusion

While the patches are intended to prevent a craving for cigarettes, the microtabs and others should be used to overcome a craving should it develop. Make sure you follow the instructions carefully because they have been scientifically calculated to provide you with the greatest benefit.

If you have any medical conditions you should approach your physician before using any Nicorette product to discuss any possible side effects. However, it is unlikely for a physician to recommend that you continue smoking rather than use a replacement! He or she is more likely to recommend that you use neither!
